Choose the right tank size
The most common mistake new betta owners make is starting with a bowl. While small glass vessels are inexpensive and visually appealing, they are unsuitable for long-term betta health. Bettas are active swimmers that require stable water parameters, which small volumes cannot provide. A bowl offers no room for essential equipment like filters or heaters, leading to rapid toxin buildup and temperature fluctuations.
Establish a 5-gallon minimum as your baseline. This volume provides enough water mass to dilute waste and maintain consistent chemistry. It also allows space for a gentle filter, a reliable heater, and some live or silk plants. Think of the tank as a biological engine; the larger the engine, the more stable the system runs. A 5-gallon tank is the smallest size where you can effectively cycle the tank and keep ammonia and nitrite levels near zero.
While some sources suggest 3 gallons as an absolute floor, 5 gallons is the practical standard for responsible care. This size accommodates the necessary equipment without crowding the fish. It also gives you room to adjust parameters if issues arise. Start with this size to ensure your betta has the best chance at a long, healthy life.

Install a submersible heater set to 78–80°F. Bettas are tropical fish that become stressed or sick in cool water. Use a separate thermometer to verify the heater’s accuracy, as built-in dials can be unreliable. Pair this with a gentle sponge filter to provide water movement without creating a strong current that exhausts your betta.
Install heater and filter correctly
Betta fish are tropical natives, meaning they rely on external heat to regulate their body temperature. In a home tank, the water will quickly drop below the 78–80°F range needed for proper digestion and immune function. Without a heater, your betta will become lethargic, lose its vibrant color, and become susceptible to common diseases like ich. A small, submersible aquarium heater is not optional; it is the single most important piece of equipment for long-term health.
Equally critical is the filtration system. Bettas have long, flowing fins that make them poor swimmers against strong currents. While the tank needs water circulation to remove toxins, the flow must be gentle. A standard power filter often creates too much turbulence, exhausting your fish. Instead, opt for a sponge filter or a small hang-on-back filter with a flow restrictor. This setup provides biological filtration to break down waste while keeping the water movement mild and safe for your betta’s delicate fins.
Cycle the tank before adding fish
Skipping the cycling process is the most common mistake new betta owners make. A tank is not ready for fish the moment you fill it with water. You must allow beneficial bacteria to colonize your filter and substrate before introducing any livestock. This biological filter converts toxic waste into harmless compounds, protecting your fish from ammonia poisoning.
Think of cycling as building an invisible immune system for your aquarium. When fish produce waste, it breaks down into ammonia, which is highly toxic. Nitrifying bacteria convert this ammonia into nitrites, and then into nitrates. Without these colonies, your betta will suffer from burn-like lesions on its fins and gills, often leading to death within days. This process typically takes 4 to 6 weeks.
To start, install your filter, heater, and substrate. Set the heater to maintain a steady 78–80°F, which encourages bacterial growth. Add a source of ammonia, such as fish food or a pure ammonia bottle, to feed the bacteria. Test your water weekly using a liquid test kit. You are ready for your betta when ammonia and nitrite levels read zero, and nitrates are below 20 ppm.
Feed your betta a balanced diet
A betta’s health depends on a diet centered on high-quality protein. Use floating pellets formulated specifically for bettas as the staple food. These pellets provide consistent nutrition and help prevent the swim bladder issues common in fish fed solely on flakes.
Treats should be occasional, not daily. Offer freeze-dried bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia two to three times a week. These supplements mimic the betta’s natural hunting behavior and add variety to their diet, but they are too rich for every meal.
Portion control is critical for water quality. Feed only what your betta can consume in two minutes, once or twice daily. Uneaten food decays rapidly, spiking ammonia levels in your 5-gallon minimum tank. If you notice cloudiness or waste floating after feeding, reduce the amount immediately.

Perform weekly water changes
Stable water parameters are the foundation of betta fish health. Even in a well-filtered 5-gallon tank, waste accumulates quickly. Bettas are sensitive to ammonia and nitrites, so you must replace a portion of the water every week to keep the environment clean.
The maintenance routine
- Prepare the replacement water: Fill a clean bucket with fresh tap water. Add a water conditioner (dechlorinator) immediately to neutralize chlorine and chloramines. Test the temperature with a thermometer; it must match the tank water within 1-2 degrees Fahrenheit. Bettas are tropical fish that thrive at 78-80°F, so cold shock is a real risk if the new water is too cool.
- Vacuum the substrate: Use a gravel siphon to remove 25-30% of the tank water. Insert the siphon into the gravel and gently stir to lift trapped debris and waste. Avoid vacuuming too vigorously near plants or decorations where beneficial bacteria live. This step removes the bulk of the toxins that filtration alone cannot catch.
- Clean the glass and refill: Wipe the inside of the glass with an algae pad to remove biofilm. Slowly pour the conditioned, temperature-matched water back into the tank. Pouring slowly prevents disturbing the substrate and stressing the fish. Avoid splashing the water surface too much, as bettas prefer calm, slow-moving water.
